History of Scuola Grande di San Rocco
The original construction that now houses the Scuola Grande di San Rocco was built in the 15th century. After the construction of the current building, the Italian painter Tintoretto (real name Jacopo Robusti, Venetian school and student of Titian) was asked on behalf of the brotherhood to create decorative paintings. After the fall of the republic of Venice, only the paintings of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco depicting the Old and New Testaments survived the fall of the republic around 1806.
What is so special about the Scuola Grande di San Rocco?
In this place you will not only find beautifully preserved paintings, but also the building itself is almost entirely in its original state. What you'll see inside is probably much darker than other Venice sights. Columns, arches and floors are the lighter elements. The entire complex actually consists of several parts that are later connected to each other. There is the Scoletta, the church itself and the beautiful halls of the Scuola Grande, which was added later.

Other painters
At this location, however, you will not only find works by Tintoretto. You will also find art – in the form of paintings, panels, ceramics, textiles and carvings – by Giorgione, Titian, Tiepolo, Antonio Zanchi, Francesco Pianta and Giovanni Marchiori. Because the republic of Venice (before it was a city) was very well aware of the value of the works of art of the Scuola, they have always had a certain status, so that the Scuola could also enjoy certain privileges. This has fostered the originality that you still feel today.
